It is estimated that within the next two decades, people over 65 years of age will represent 19% of the total Canadian population. The physiological effects of aging, combined with the established travel patterns of today's active seniors, may result in a generation of drivers who demand mobility but require others to supply it. Unfortunately, limited data on elderly travel habits make it difficult to plan for the provision of alternative transportation means.

520 $a This thesis describes a pilot study using a Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to investigate the travel habits of urban and rural older drivers in Greater Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. The pilot study found that urban and rural seniors had respective average daily travel times of 43 and 65 minutes, average daily travel of 24 km and 63 km, and average link speeds of 30 km/h and 45 km/h. GPS data were also found to be applicable for use in quantifying exposure based on road classification and routing choice.
520 $a The majority of trip-making took place during off-peak periods. The urban seniors, on average, performed more round trips, had fewer trip links in a chain, and returned home more frequently than the rural seniors. Rural seniors performed more social trips and trips with passengers than their urban counterparts. Both groups performed nearly an equal share of both life maintenance and higher order trip links, with social trips being the most frequent trip purpose, followed by shopping.
