Thesis (Ed.D.)--Peabody College for Teachers of Vanderbilt University, 2005.
Never before have community colleges turned directly toward advancement and/or development professionals to the degree to which they are currently to salvage institutions from financial crises or to pull downtrodden institutions from the vice grips of a financial abyss. The ability to generate private funding is becoming more of a priority to academic governing boards and presidents on a daily basis. Today, the professions of advancement and development are more valuable to the American higher education institution than any day preceding. This is true for both public and private institutions as well as within both 2- and 4-year institutions.

Significant barriers to effectively developing, designing, and implementing successful advancement and development programs exists within the community college arena, some of which are boldly apparent while others are distantly vague and intangible. Within this study, information is shared in the form of a "model of success" serving as a communication crux for productive conversations with and among advancement) development professionals, presidents, boards of trustees, faculty, alumni, volunteers, donors, and friends of the college. As this study progressed, an examination into the aforementioned college revealed an example of a successful advancement and development program that should be of interest to any astute, fund- and friend-seeking professional attempting to benchmark an existing program or to build a program from conception.
