Although Beethoven's late quartets were slow to achieve canonical status within critical commentaries, there appears to be no doubt that they now represent the epitome of Beethoven's genius. How did such a change occur? What were the motivating factors behind the critical reversal that occurred during the course of the nineteenth century? The common story which accompanies any discussion of the late quartets is that the early critics did not understand them, that they could not comprehend the quartets' musical workings and were thus baffled into condemning them as products of lunacy. Although the earliest critics were confounded by the musical aspects of the late quartets, what they could not explain was Beethoven's deafness or illness, to which they assumed the quartets were linked. It is shown that Beethoven's biographical circumstances played a much larger role in the critical reception of these pieces than did their musical content.Subjects--Topical Terms:

By the 1850s, critics such as Adolf Bernhard Marx and Wilhelm von Lenz were able to describe carefully the intricate details of the late music, but they simply did not see any reason to elevate that music above the much loved music of the second period style. It was the achievement of Richard Wagner to provide both a way for critics to discuss Beethoven's deafness and to show how the products of that deafness were to be more highly valued than any of Beethoven's previous works. After Wagner's innovative step, the critics and theorists following him attempted to reformulate his vague ideas of musical superiority into more technical language, and to support his claims with musical evidence. It is my contention that the assumptions surrounding just how Beethoven's circumstances affected his work, either positively or negatively, have not been seriously challenged since Wagner's re-estimation of their value over 100 years ago. My study examines just what those assumptions are, and to what extent they have continued to inflect analyses of the late quartets to the present day.
