Thesis (M.S.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2005.
The rocky intertidal zone, of Charles Island in Long Island Sound off Milford, CT, that Hemigrapsus sanguineus, the Asian shore crab, commonly inhabits, reflects its need for a sheltered environment which provides protection from thermal stress, desiccation, and predation. In this study crab densities under different size classes of rocks were compared. Field studies were conducted to determine whether rocks with larger surface areas provide more habitat and therefore more shelter for more crabs than smaller rocks with smaller surface areas. Based on regression curve analysis of the data collected a significant positive relationship (R2 = 0.622 P = <0.001) was found between rock size (surface area) and density of crabs sheltered beneath.
