Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1998.
The dissertation explores the symbolic connections made between mass-mediated commercial popular music and a deeply felt sense of connection to the historical past in two communities on the San Carlos Apache reservation in southeastern Arizona. In the dissertation it is argued that hybrid musical forms--the blending of disparate musical-cultural styles or elements--take advantage of the ambiguities inherent in cultural categorization in order to express and comment upon the histories and social relations between groups in post-colonial contexts.

The dissertation examines and draws linkages between three broad cultural domains: historical discourses, everyday life, and aesthetics, in order to demonstrate how experiences that are unmarked and everyday, like hearing a rock song played on the radio, become symbolically linked with experiences, knowledges, and ideologies that are more deeply resonant with history and the past. I argue that this juxtapositioned layering of past and present, as well as the centrality of resonance with the past, constitutes a foundational trope in the aesthetics and cultural poetics of the reservation communities.
