The agricultural sector can play a vital role in the economic development of the less developed countries (LDCs) by providing food and income for the people-capital, labor and raw materials for industry. The strategies adopted by various LDCs in selecting appropriate means of achieving agricultural development vary markedly. The role of mechanical-power technology has been compared with biological and chemical technologies in such areas as weed control. In more agriculturally developed LDCs, their roles are considered to be complementary. However, the problems of low crop production per unit land may have been replaced by more serious problems associated with extensive chemical use. In the context of intensifying crop production through increased inputs, especially chemicals, this complementary role has been misunderstood.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The literature review of different methods and approaches to LDCs' development in agriculture reveals an interesting phenomenon. Patterns in agricultural modernization put forth by more developed countries (MDCs) may not be adequate. Recently, LDCs have been searching for patterns that are more suitable to their specific conditions and the needs of their farms. Hence, "appropriate technology packages" have been designed, for example by FAO, in accordance with the farm sizes, complexity of the inputs, and related knowledge which is required to be transferred from MDCs. This is viewed as a positive and necessary step by this dissertation, but not enough to ensure success because a major factor has been overlooked.

This dissertation examines various farming management programs to support its thesis that the degree of success in achieving balanced and comprehensive development in sustainable dryland farming depends upon the utilization of appropriate "conservation" farm technology. The importance of the conservation factor lies with its logic and the fact that people can relate to its principles. In this context, this catalyst is required to facilitate the interaction of the technical and social components of the transferred technology.
