Since 1969, the Ministry of Education in Korea has outlined the mandatory courses in all school subjects from kindergarten to high school, stipulating specific courses in dance that are subsumed within the domain of physical education. However, according to participants interviewed by the investigator, few movement and dance courses are provided, because of a lack of sufficient resources, materials, and well-trained teachers. The only Korean materials on dance education for children merely contain simple explanations of movement practices to be carried out with or without children's songs.

The interviews reveal that many educators and dance professionals in Korea are beginning to recognize the value of creative dance in early childhood education. They agree that creative dance can benefit children in communication with others, and expression of feelings.

Adding to a literature dominated by works originating in the West, this study is the first to address the theory and practice behind creative dance education for children in kindergarten school in Korea. In it, the investigator has outlined the central principles to which teachers should adhere when teaching creative dance classes. Building upon these principles, the investigator has developed five steps--warm-up, dance, relaxation, discussion, and dance presentation--to guide children's development, whether mental, emotional physical, or social and to expand their aesthetic and cultural understanding. The principles and practices described in the guidelines should prove to be of value to kindergarten teachers who teach creative dance in kindergarten school in Korea.
