As the title suggests, the dialectics of nihilism and transcendence in the poetry of Cesar Davila Andrade is the subject of this study whose primary objective is to achieve a better understanding of the poetical works under consideration, specially those of his third period, inaccessible to criticism because of its hermetic nature. I have divided his poetical works into three periods: his poetic debut consist of a group of poems that were published in several literary magazines and newspapers, there is also his first published book Espacio, me has vencido. The second stage called "americanista" is essentially of a historical and geographical subject matter. And finally, the third period of his poetical development deals with metaphysical and esoteric subjects. The outstanding characteristics of each period are analyzed. Representative poems are studied in order to demonstrate the functioning of the polarities nihilism and transcendence as a dynamic element as his work unfolds throughout its different stages.

Special attention is given to the content and the formal elements of his work, and to the innovative stages of Davila Andrade's poetical production. The author use both subtle lyricism, colloquial language and prosaic expression with the same artistry. At a more profound level, the scope and nature of the message are emphasized by means of symbols, as well as of esoteric, religious, and hermetic elements.

The poetry of Cesar Davila Andrade is a constant exploration of the being, thus, it reflects the existential preoccupation of man facing up the flight of time, the certainty of death and the elusive consistency of a changeable reality. And, above all, Poetry is for Davila Andrade a constant search for knowledge as the only way towards a transcendent level of consciousness.

This study may facilitate a better understanding of Cesar Davila Andrade's poetry, including his hermetic period. Also, it may be useful for students of Spanish Literature as well as for those interested in contemporary poetry. It may open the way for new readings and further research of the cosmic vision and art of one of the most outstanding poets of Ecuador of the twentieth century.
