The directors of twenty-two ABGC-accredited genetic counseling training programs were surveyed regarding the public health topics currently included in their program curriculum. Eleven genetic counselors who are members of the Public Health Special Interest Group within the National Society of Genetic Counselors were also surveyed to assess their opinion on public health topics that should be included in the curriculum of a genetic counseling training program. The difference between what is currently included by genetic counseling training programs and what is believed to be essential by genetic counselors who have previously worked or currently work in the field of public health suggests that the curriculum should be reevaluated. Suggestions to increase the quantity of public health topics genetic counseling students are exposed to are offered.
