Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Virginia, 2005.
This study investigated the relationship of health behaviors with mental and physical factors, social support, socioeconomic status, socio-cultural factors and stress. A large public database of approximately 20,000 subjects was used to test an hypothesized model. Structural equation modeling failed to identify a single model. Multiple regression analyses confirmed that social support, socioeconomic status, age and sex were consistently strong predictors of health behaviors, although they were weighted differently for different age groups. For subjects over 60, improved physical functioning predicted more exercise, less health care and fewer negative health behaviors. For subjects 18--39, affective disorders predicted more negative health behavior, while better neurological test scores predicted more exercise and less health care contact.
