Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Berkeley, 2001.
This dissertation elaborates an analysis of Asturias' work taking as a point of departure the convergence of travel, avant-garde discourse and ethnography. My aim is to demonstrate that Asturias' work is profoundly marked by moral imperatives, which, once condensed in narrative, emerge as a representational reconfiguration of the hybrid character of the Guatemalan nation or as a political and transgressive discourse that surpasses the traditional limits of meaning, unity and representation. Asturias' discursive practices aimed at coalescing aesthetics and political consciousness.

I first examine the significance of Asturias' traveling from the "periphery" to the European metropolis (Paris) and the derivative journalistic activity undertaken by the author between 1924 and 1933. Thereafter, I direct the focus at avant-garde aesthetics and ethnographic developments in 1920s Paris. Their parallel emergence leads to an unprecedented cultural relativism and an ethnographic attitude that questions European cultural norms and embraces other cultural dispositions or "exotic" alternatives. My objective is to understand what displacement generates in Asturias as well as what he---a student of ethnography and adherent of surrealist poetics---does with the latter alternatives as he embarks upon a literary project that explores the relationship between the local, identity and the nation.

I then illustrate the implications of ethnographic surrealism and cultural subversion in three of Asturias' works: Leyendas de Guatemala, Hombres de maiz and Mulata de Tal. Asturias' literary project encompasses a revisit to the character of the nation from a perspective that relativizes Hispanic cultural hegemony, authenticates pre-Columbian tropes and ethnicity and suggests simultaneous cultural amalgamation and dissimilarities. Asturias reconfigures national identity by constituting popular myths with pre-Columbian tropes as an exemplification of the antagonism and negotiation of cultural values in hybrid spaces. In Mulata de Tal, Asturias adopts, but without abandoning his overall project, a powerful aesthetics of disgust, subversion, and transgression as an instrument for political action.

In an appendix, I show the nature of Asturias' manuscripts from a critico-genetico method that reveals the strategies and paradigmatic behaviors of a complex activity subject to the multiplicity of textual mutations.
