Thesis (D.M.A.)--Arizona State University, 2005.
Due to negligible university training in the pedagogy of applied instruction and the lack of performance curricula, private teachers often rely on their intuition, experience and the content and structure of available method books. The majority of clarinet method books seldom address many of the crucial concepts in music other than technical facility, tone production, and music reading. The imbalance of content in the instructional material, when compared to the desired skills of national standards and university entrance requirements, suggests the need for more comprehensive clarinet teaching materials. The concept of comprehensive musicianship was popularized in the 1970s and even though today it is still endorsed by many education associations, national standards, and leading music pedagogues, it is nominally represented in private instrumental method books. With the insight of renowned comprehensive musicianship endeavors such as the Manhattanville Music Curriculum Program, Hawaii's Music Curriculum Project, and Wisconsin's Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance Program, this paper proposes a method book curriculum for the pre-college clarinetist and provides sample teaching units. It is not meant to serve as an overview of comprehensive musicianship or its curricula, or popular educational theories. The document cites reputable comprehensive musicianship guides and curricula as the basis of concepts and sequences used to construct a music curriculum for an intermediate clarinetist method book. The sample teaching units represent sections of a proposed book that illustrate the possibility and advantage of integrating comprehensive music objectives with performance goals.
