The objectives of this study were to develop a descriptive profile of offenders with psychotic and/or mood disorders who are being released in the Ontario region of the Correctional Service of Canada, to determine the extent to which these offenders are enabled to access community based mental health services, and to determine if there is a relationship between participation in institutional psychiatric services within one year prior to release from prison and being referred to community based mental health services prior to release. The study also examined relationships between participation in psychiatric services and being referred to a community based mental health service, and demographic and correctional factors.

520 $a Using a retrospective approach, data were collected from existing health care and case management files of the Ontario region of the Correctional Service of Canada. Data were coded and analysed using EPI-INFO Version 6---a word processing, database, and statistics computer software system.
