Throughout the explorations of this Master of Fine Arts, 3 dances followed different paths with regard to concept, process, and final product. Male-inism (24--27 minutes), premiered on February 20, 2003, as part of the "No Loitering" graduate concert. Male-inism (24--27 minutes) addressed personal issues surrounding masculinity and how socio-cultural factors insidiously cripple men's inner lives. Portrait of the World as a Mirror in Lead (14 minute) conceived for the October 9, 2003, graduate production, "Wading," made use of surrealism and grotesque to generate a uniquely quirky world. Its self-absorbed subjects constructed a distorted social machinery in which perpetual, absurd movement can only be interrupted by an accidental return to simplicity and the natural. Cusp (13 minutes) premiered on February 19, 2004, during the graduate concert "The Parts We Play." Cusp metaphorically photographed a turning point in the characters' psyches. While imminent resolutions were to be taken, the focus of the dance was not what lay beyond this threshold but rather its very intensity in one given moment.
