The purpose of this study was to determine if attitudes toward computer use (anxiety, confidence, liking, and usefulness) and individual characteristics (age, education, and computer experience) may predict success by adult workers in Mississippi manufacturing industries when using an e-learning training module.

520 $a The purpose of this study was to determine if attitudes toward computer use (anxiety, confidence, liking, and usefulness) and individual characteristics (age, education, and computer experience) may predict success by adult workers in Mississippi manufacturing industries when using an e-learning training module.
520 $a Data were collected for three research questions using the e-learning training module, developed at the Mississippi State University Research and Curriculum Unit, and the Computer Attitude Scale developed by Loyd and Loyd. The participants included 101 manufacturing workers employed at a Mississippi industry. The measure of the dependent variable was calculated from the total correct responses on the e-learning training module. A second "dummy" variable was then constructed to establish a baseline for pass/fall. Because the data were dichotomous, logistic regression was used to analyze the responses. The findings of this study indicated that of the attitudinal variables, liking and computer experience were statistically significant. Of the individual characteristics, education was significant although not in the expected direction of higher education, better performance.
520 $a The conclusion drawn from this study indicates that e-learning can and should be used to upgrade job skills when people like working with computers. Positive attitudes toward computer use, along with more than one year of computer experience, may predict success when using an e-learning training module.
520 $a The recommendation was to use the CAS with the model that combines all attitude variables and individual characteristics. The research should focus on liking, those who like working with computers, and computer experience, those with one year or more, to predict employee success using e-learning training modules. While education was significant in this model, it was not in the expected direction of those with college or trade school education performing better with the e-learning module. It is suggested that more research be conducted on this variable and its predictive capabilities.
