Purpose of the study. This study's intent was to investigate the effects of a comprehensive group counseling program (consisting of solution focused brief therapy, action learning techniques, community mentorship, peer mentorship, and parent training) on 8th grade girls' drug use, attitudes toward drug use, knowledge of consequences of drug use, classroom and home behaviors, self esteem, and grades. There has been minimal research on effective drug prevention and intervention programs for females (Blumenthal, 1998) despite dramatic increases in substance use for this population (Najavits, 2002).

Procedure. Participants were 8th grade girls attending a south Texas middle school. Thirty-two girls were randomly selected and exposed to the treatment for a period of sixteen weeks. Thirty-three randomly selected girls were included in a control group. Subjects, parents, and teachers of participants in both groups completed pre-post treatment assessments. Grade point averages and number of office referrals were calculated the semester prior to and following the treatment.

The main effects of the intervention were determined by comparing the means on eight instruments (American Drug & Alcohol Survey, Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory, 2nd Edition Attitude scale, knowledge exam, Piers Harris Children's Self Concept Scale, 2nd Edition, School Social Behavior Scales, 2nd Edition Social Competence Scale, Home & Community Social Behavior Scale, Social Competence Scale, grade point averages, and number of office referrals) designated as dependent variables.

Eight hypotheses were tested and the results analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance with preplanned univariate analysis of covariance as follow up comparisons. All findings were interpreted at an alpha level of .05.

Findings. Statistical analyses revealed the following: (1) Participants in the experimental group reported a significant reduction in drug use as compared to those in the control group. (2) Treatment group subjects were found to have significantly less favorable attitudes toward drug use than participants in the control group. (3) Student knowledge was found to be significantly higher for participants in the treatment group as compared to those in the control group. (4) Participants in the treatment group did not report a significant improvement in self esteem. (5) Teacher reported student competent behaviors for the treatment group were significantly higher than those for the control group. (6) Parent reported student competent behaviors for the treatment group were significantly higher than those for the control group. (7) Grades were not significantly different between the treatment and control groups. (8) Number of office referrals was not significantly different between the treatment and control groups.

Conclusions. A comprehensive treatment program comprised of solution focused brief therapy, action learning techniques, community and peer mentorship, and parent training was effective in reducing student drug ingestion, changing student attitudes about drug use, increasing knowledge of the physical consequences of drug use, and improving competent behaviors. Findings suggest that the implementation of a comprehensive counseling program for 8th grade girls within the school setting can produce significant results. Counseling practices that improve grades and reduce negative behaviors demand further study.
