Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Kansas, 1991.
To date, little research has been conducted on the role of prayer as a viable coping technique. The present study was conducted as a preliminary investigation into the role of private prayer as a possible coping technique for adult patients who were chronically ill with arthritis. Initially, a prayer inventory was developed to measure various quantitative and qualitative aspects of prayer. The qualitative aspects of the instrument were based on a theoretical model of the content of prayer. Next, for empirical development and validation, the inventory was administered to a Midwestern college sample of undergraduate students (187 males, 118 females). Finally, to evaluate the role of prayer as a coping technique, the inventory was administered to a group of adult patients who had had arthritis for at least six months and who were receiving treatment for the disease at a Midwestern university medical center (36 males, 126 females). These patients also completed other self-report measures, including the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales, Religious Orientation Scale, and Hope Scale.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Results revealed several important findings. In terms of scale development, the prayer inventory was found to have acceptable internal consistency, convergent validity, and discriminant utility. Further, the five theoretical qualitative prayer types were empirically validated through factor analysis. These types included prayers of adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication, and reception. When the scale was used to predict the impact of arthritis, multiple regression analyses revealed that for patients who engaged in private prayer (1) having greater faith in prayer was positively related to better emotional adjustment; (2) praying more days per week was positively related to fewer health concerns; (3) engaging in confessional prayer was positively related to having more health concerns; and (4) engaging in receptive prayer was positively related to greater social involvement with friends and relatives. Limitations and implications of these results are discussed and recommendations for future research are made.
