Thesis (M.S.)--D'Youville College, 2004.
This qualitative descriptive study examined cancer patients' perception of chronic pain, quality of care, administration of pain medication, prompt attention to patient specific needs, treatment modalities, and barriers to patient satisfaction. Semistructured interviews lasting approximately 60 minutes were completed with 5 patients receiving palliative care from a general hospital located in Western Ontario. Watson's (1996) science of caring theory guided this research. The study examined the lived experience of individuals experiencing severe chronic pain. Study data collected via audiotapes were analyzed by utilizing content analysis methodologies. The results indicated that the patients felt that they could call the nurses at any time for help and nurses would come within minutes. All 5 patients reported that nurses provided care that promoted their comfort and administered pain medication to relieve their pain.
