The objective of this study was to describe the variation in life-history traits of Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) populations in the Great Lakes and Inland Lakes. Chapter 1 examines the effects of common fish sampling problems on the parameter estimates of the VBGF. The biological realism of the VB parameter estimates improved by following a series of data refinements. Chapter 2 describes the covariation patterns between life history parameters among Lake Whitefish populations. Predictable and systematic covariation patterns in pre-reproductive growth rate, age and size of maturation, maximum size potential, reproductive investment, and adult natural mortality were found. Time of maturation was independent of both age and size and variation in the age at 50% maturity could be explained by variation in pre-reproductive growth rate. Fast growing individuals reached their asymptote earlier, had a higher reproductive investment and suffered a higher predicted mortality. Life history patterns for the Great Lakes stocks were explicitly contrasted with those from other inland lakes stocks.
