The experiences of people who have participated or are participating in courses and programs offered by Landmark Education are examined in order to build a theory which forwards the sociological understanding of dereification. When a product of human construction occurs as something other than a product of human construction it is reified. When the occurrence of this reified product shifts so that it is understood as a product of human construction it is dereified. This work focuses on the dereification of the internal subjective constructions of the individual. Normally in our everyday life we understand our interpretations to be representations of how "things really are," rather than viewing our interpretations as interpretations. In other words, in our everyday lives our interpretations are reed. In the process of dereification studied for this work the individual attributes agency to his or her self. It is partially through this attribution of agency that he or she experiences an increased level of freedom and empowerment in his or her life. Affect-meanings are emotional responses that individuals associate with thought objects. These affect-meanings can result in the experience of decreased agency for the individual. One of the most important uses of dereification is the access that it grants the individual to either remove affect-meaning or act in spite of affect-meaning.
