Thesis (Ph.D.)--Wayne State University, 2001.
This study explores the oral narratives of three generations of members of a well-known Detroit organization, the Brewster Old Timers (BOT). The stories gathered are useful in empowering the "muted" voices of the organization. The generations are represented by the length of time in the organization, not the chronological ages of the members. Yesterday characterizes the first generation members, today symbolizes the second generation members, and tomorrow denotes the third generation members. Ten BOT members are interviewed. Ethnographic techniques are used to examine the culture of the organization. The study also examines the evolution of the Brewster Old Timers organization as it parallels the history of Detroit. In addition, the evolution of the BOT is compared to the life cycle of an organization.

The conclusions advanced support the premise that social organizations such as the Brewster Old Timers have not outlived their social usefulness. Additionally, there is a place for organizations such as this one to maintain community ties. Moreover, the oral history presented can only be captured through those who lived the experience and are able to communicate the experience to future generations.
