Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 2000.
The purpose of the study includes three parts. The first part---to identify and synthesize the salient themes and patterns of interinstitutional collaboration within higher education consortia identified by prior studies---was addressed through a review of literature. Following the review of literature concerning higher education consortia and the collaborative processes, the researcher reviewed collaborative and adaptive theories from the social science disciplines of political science, voluntary organizations, family systems theory, and adaptive theories from higher education consortia. The second and third steps in the study were to develop and test a theoretical model for consortia adaptation. The empirical research design used structural equation modeling procedures and archival and survey data gathering techniques from 52 higher education consortia and 175 member institutions to address the following research objectives: (1) Identify the internal and external stresses or opportunities that drove higher education organizations to choose the adaptive strategy of consortia formation. (2) Determine if a connection exists between those internal and external stresses and consortium longevity. (3) Identify the conditions, common values, attitudes, themes, and patterns of behaviors of the member institutions individually and collectively that contribute to consortium longevity. (4) Identify the patterns or characteristics of maturity that emerge as consortium adapt. (5) Develop a model, either confirmatory in nature or newly generated, that will add to the understanding of consortia.

The findings of the study supported many of the principles associated with theories derived from a broad range of disciplines. The structural equation modeling process expressed those principles in the form of constructs within a systems context. The two main systems addressed were the organizational structures and the adaptive process. Tested individually, the findings indicated a high goodness of fit for the two systems. Combining the two systems to test the proposed theoretical model for consortia adaptation resulted in a model with fewer constructs and associated variables. However, many of the general themes were evident.
