Although not widely recognized within Psychology as a discipline, the Enneagram, referred to in this study as the Nine-Point Personality System (NPS), has been used increasingly in recent years by clinicians in the mental health field. Those who are familiar with NPS as a diagnostic tool report that it has face validity as a comprehensive and useful means of personality assessment. The present study proposes a theory that grounds NPS within the framework of what is known about the neurotransmitters Dopamine, Serotonin, and Norepinepherine.

The author reviews the origin and history of NPS, suggests correlations between NPS types and Axis II Personality Disorders described within DSM-IV, and offers a rationale for why the proposed neurophysiological underpinnings of NPS are worthy of detailed empirical research. Specifically, the author suggests ways in which each of the nine distinct NPS personality types is associated with a unique configuration of the activity of the three main neurotransmitter pathways. The proposed theory associates the many shades and variations of human personality characteristics with neurotransmitter patterns in relation to degrees of fluctuation in their activity levels. The author discusses potential relationships between the influences of heredity and environment as viewed through the lens of NPS and concludes with suggestions for further research and discussion of possible implications for personality assessment and clinical intervention.
