While fund raising has played a prominent role in the history of American higher education, financial resource development in American higher education is at a crossroads. College and university fund-raising operations now appear disconnected from the academic and financial planning that informs institutional strategic planning. Senior administrators at several institutions have started to consider alternatives to traditional fund-raising programs. One such alternative involves the linking of fund raising (development operations) with academic planning and budgeting. This research discusses the forces leading to this change, the concept of strategic fund raising, and the issues and concerns that arise when institutions attempt to link fund raising with academic planning and budgeting.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Seven institutions participated in this case study analysis. This purposeful sample includes six public universities and one private university who remain committed to integrating fund raising with academic planning and budgeting. This research discusses the core concept of strategic fund raising as well as the issues and challenges associated with strategic fund raising that surfaced at these institutions between the summers of 1998 and 2000. Based on in-depth interview data and institutional data and document analysis, this study provides useful information for other institutions that are seeking new ways to connect their fund-raising efforts with academic and fiscal planning.

Chapters include: descriptions of the participating universities, a discussion of strategic fund raising and the strategic fund-raising model, and a thematic analysis of the challenges and issues universities face when trying to integrate fund raising with academic planning and budgeting. University and college administrators, trustees, faculty members, and others campus community members who are interested in understanding and pursuing strategic fund raising will turn to this research for an in-depth understanding of strategic fund raising. Lessons learned from the institutions included in this study will provide valuable insights to other institutions that are struggling with how to secure alternate funds for stated institutional strategic goals.
