Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Virginia, 2003.
Colleges and universities continue to face financial challenges. Private funding from high capacity individual donors to higher education serves as an important source of revenue that is necessary to meet these challenges. The purpose of this study was to determine why some high capacity donors contributed at their predicted levels while their counterparts did not. The focus of this study was on donor motivation rather than factors such as age, gender, and other geodemographic data.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A 53-item survey was mailed to 908 potential respondents and 552 completed, usable surveys were returned for a response rate of 61%. Thirty-nine of the items dealt with a donor's motivation to give. The data from the surveys were analyzed using factor analysis and the result was a solution containing seven motivational categories. An analysis of variance was performed using scores on each category to answer the three research questions posed for this study.

Statistically significant differences in motivation were found among high donors and low donors on five of the seven categories of motivation: Belief in the Institution, Perpetuation, Relational, Financial, and Obligation/Responsibility. There were no statistically significant differences found across the four levels of predicted capacity nor was their any interactive effect of donor status and predicted capacity on motivation. Implications and recommendations were presented based on these findings.
