Thesis (M.Sc.)--York University (Canada), 2002.
The Mackenzie GEWEX Study (MAGS) is the major Canadian effort within the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX). MAGS focuses on the energy and water processes occurring over the Mackenzie Basin. This thesis characterizes the major rain-producing systems during the spring and summer of 1999 within the southern Mackenzie Basin and in the vicinity of Edmonton, in particular.

As part of this effort, an examination was carried out of the significance of episodic, large-accumulation storms to the long-term rainfall. On average, it was found that the 8 largest storms produce 50% of the annual rainfall at Edmonton. During the 1998–99 water year, 7 systems were required to produce 50% of the rainfall.

These storms displayed distinctive features. For 1999, they were all slow-moving systems that were dominated by stratiform processes. They typically had very small anvil regions and this reduced precipitation loss aloft. They nonetheless showed considerable temporal and spatial variability in terms of rainfall down to scales of the order of 1 h and 10 km, respectively.

The CMC GEM model is able to replicate some aspects of these systems (e.g. temperature and winds) but had difficulty with moisture parameters (e.g. vapour and rain).
