Currently in Canada, approximately 50% of individuals meet the recommended levels of daily physical activity (PA) (PHAC, 2007). With such a large population being deemed inactive, many face increased health risks. Social support and self-determination are known determinants of PA (Buckworth & Dishman, 2007), but research on the relationships between these variables is limited especially at the global and situational levels (Vallerand, 2007).

The present study tested multiple postulates of the HMIEM (Hierarchical Model of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation; Vallerand, 1997) at three levels of generality (i.e., global, contextual, and situational) when perceived social support was used as a social factor within the HMIEM. A sample of university students (N = 384) took part in the study by answering questionnaires that included multiple measures deemed fit to examine the HMIEM variables. Structural Equation Modelling was utilized to examine the HMIEM postulates and the nature of the relationships between (a) perceived social support, (b) psychological needs satisfaction, (c) self-determination, and (d) physical activity intentions.

Support was found for the HMIEM sequence at all levels of the hierarchy when social support was used as a social factor. Also, evidence supports the relationships within the HMIEM sequence in a physical activity context. The current study findings provided evidence that social support is an important factor for the development of self-determination in both life and in a PA context. Further, self-determined motivation for physical activity was found to be associated with physical activity intentions at the contextual level.
