Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Union Institute, 1990.
My research dissertation is an investigation of first person accounts of adults chronically abused as children. Its intent is to provide in-depth descriptions and analyses of significant episodes of abuse and its effects on the lives of my research participants. I believe that this kind of knowledge can provide important data that will facilitate more effective treatment strategies. Prior studies in this area have been limited to natural science research focusing upon causal factors and quantitative information. This study is distinguished from previous research in its first-person accounts and in its elucidation of the core constituents of child abuse. The data from qualitative interviews with nine women and three men were utilized to arrive at verbatim descriptions of significant traumatic episodes in the lives of the research participants. All had been physically, sexually, and/or psychologically abused.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The participants' own words and meanings were analysed, using phenomenal methodology based upon van Kaam (1969) and Moustakas (1988). Exemplary vignettes of two participants were presented to depict graphically the effects of maltreatment over an extended period of time.

Being abused as a child is an experience described by participants as painful and terrifying, leading to a death-like obliteration of consciousness. The data disclosed resultant damage to personal identity, self-esteem, and the ability to form trusting interpersonal relationships. The participants also reported recurrent feelings of chronic depression, sadness, anger and guilt. Relationships with others were typically marked by distrust, suspicion, and discord.

Implications for advancing the use of phenomenological psychology as an effective treatment modality in confronting problems resulting from child abuse were outlined and discussed. Suggestions for future qualitative research were advanced with a focus on persons who have successfully survived the experience of being chronically abused as children.
