This study examines and describes the role of religious and secular oral music traditions among the African-American communities in six counties of Northeast Mississippi. The study is divided into four distinct parts: (1) an ethnography of the African-American community, (2) the religious music traditions, (3) the secular music traditions, and (4) a brief history of the famed Rust College Singers' impact on the region. In addition, a summary chapter with conclusions and recommendations for future study is provided.

This study discusses the emergence and disappearance of various religious and secular music traditions and the social contexts in which they were formed. I focused in-depth on religious music traditions such as gospel choirs, gospel quartets, shape-note hymnody, spirituals, Dr. Watts tunes, revival and baptismal songs. The secular music traditions described include blues, string bands, fife and drum bands and the fiddle and banjo traditions.

Fourteen music transcriptions with stylistic analysis of religious and secular music performances from the Northeast Mississippi region have been provided. The study describes several African-American music traditions that are in a perpetual state of evolution and change. Blues and gospel music are the most popular music traditions found in the Northeast Mississippi region.
