This dissertation deals with the cultural processes by which a musical tradition initially inspired by external models develops and becomes established as a national tradition both in respect of its dominant stylistic features and the performance culture that sustains it as an integral part of social and institutional life.

The most critical of these processes is the process of institutionalization which enables whatever is established at any given period in respect of form, content and conventions of performance to become not only crystallized and firmly rooted in the thinking and behavior of musicians and their audiences or linked to particular contexts but also serve as a springboard for further change and crystallization. It is the manner in which this and other cultural processes have shaped Zairean popular music and its performance culture that this dissertation examines and illuminates, using contemporary musical life in Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire, as its principal ethnographic context. The processes are discussed from the perspective of how Zaireans experience and think about their music, using as a framework concepts elicited through the application of the techniques of ethnosemantics.

Beginning with the history of this music, the chapters of the dissertation deal successively with the processes manifested in the interaction of music-makers with their audiences, the creation and use of song texts, compositional forms, conventions of performance, and the role of popular music in related arts, social events, religion, and politics.

The effect of the close relationship Zairean popular music maintains with international popular music as well as music and dance traditions of its own cultural environment are noted alongside the vitality assured by the continual crystallization of its norms and its national recognition as an integral part of contemporary Zairean culture.
