This study examined the gambling behavior of a sample of college students with regard to the theory of planned behavior (TPB) constructs. Gambling behavior among a large sample of college students (n = 771) located at a southeastern U.S. university was examined via a classroom-based assessment battery. The assessment battery included subscales that assessed participants' gambling prevalence, gambling level, gambling expenditure, and TPB constructs (i.e., intentions, subjective norms, self-efficacy, and attitudes) in regard to gambling.

In general, the results from this research support the utility of TPB in explaining gambling behavior among college students. Theory constructs friend and family norms, attitudes, and self-efficacy were significantly associated with intention to gamble. In turn, intention to gamble was positively associated with various gambling behaviors including past year gambling, frequent gambling, and disordered gambling. This study was unique in that it examined the relationship of self-efficacy regarding gambling behavior in conjunction with other TPB constructs. The inclusion of self-efficacy in examinations of gambling behavior among this population was supported, as it was significantly associated with and further explained one's intention to gamble.

These results warrant the development and implementation of college health promotion efforts to attempt to correct misperceptions of peer approval regarding gambling behavior, decrease one's personal approval of gambling behavior, and increase one's self-efficacy to control gambling behavior in various situations. Programs predicated around principles such as these would likely decrease one's intention to gamble and in turn decrease gambling behavior and the negative consequences associated with disordered gambling.
