This dissertation traces the development of minor transpacific cultural history by analyzing a series of literary works produced by Octavio Paz and Oe Kenzaburo following their travels to each other's countries. The purpose of placing these two writers more directly into dialogue is to shift the way we currently understand contemporary world literature amidst the movements and exchanges between non-hegemonic spaces, in this case Mexico and Japan. I focus on their roles as intellectuals and scholars, translations of their literary works, works they translated themselves either in part or as a whole, their experimental projects in imitating or recreating literary genres of the other's national tradition, and the philosophical exchanges between each traveling writer and his former host country. These focused analyses contribute to a larger understanding of the ideologies at play in the control of texts through translation; I show how institutional policies contribute to this control, and moreover how certain ideologies of transnational relationships and inherited patterns of imagined geographies shape how readers in one language view the literature and people of another. In the case of these two nations in particular, where direct contact is relatively limited, cultural artifacts such as literary texts play an especially crucial role in molding attitudes toward and perceptions of the cross-cultural other. Indeed, by examining the way these two writers continually reworked their understanding of their experience abroad, of the host nation and its local cultures, we witness the evolution of a new way of imagining the world along alternate vectors---that is, direct relationships between marginalized or exoticized peoples that can rectify the overemphasis on relationships between dominant nations and their symbolic "others."
