Shallow gassy sediments are found in marine environments allover the world. The prediction of their geoacoustic properties requires accurate information about the bubble size distribution and concentration, but the direct measurement of these parameters requires expensive equipment. The main objective of this study was to estimate the geoacoustic parameter values of the gassy sediment layer found in St. Margaret's Bay, through the Bayesian inversion of a low-frequency underwater acoustic signal, a scheme that does not rely on prior knowledge of the sediment type or properties. Inversion of simulated data sets showed that the method can distinguish between a gassy and non-gassy seabed, as well as reasonably estimate the geoacoustic properties of the gassy sediment layer. The inversion of the field data showed that the method can provide an initial appraisal of the geoacoustic properties of gassy sediments, without the use of expensive pressure cores or in situ measurements.
