Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Toledo, 2009.
The history of Ohio, and particularly that of the city of Toledo, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century has, up until now recounted the contributions of General Roeliff Brinkerhoff to the advancement of prison and asylum reform. This study focuses on the contributions of another member of this illustrious family, Robert Moore Brinkerhoff, the first political cartoonist for the Toledo Blade. Beginning with an examination of the history of political cartooning in the nineteenth century and the technological advancements that spurred the growth of newspaper publishing, this study will concentrate on the link between the "golden age of journalism" and Brinkerhoff's career. His father contributed to the newspaper and publishing business in Toledo during this period. Brinkerhoff's work in Toledo was contemporary with new century. This was a time of progressive fervor and "bossism." It was the era of two of the United States' most famous progressive mayors, Samuel "Golden Rule" Jones and Brand Whitlock. "Brinks" cartoons took aim at all of this along with commentary on the increased influence of the prohibition movement and the political upheavals in Europe and Russia. This project will contribute to the history of the city of Toledo and the artistic contributions of its native son, Robert Moore Brinkerhoff.
