Thesis (Psy.D.)--Adler School of Professional Psychology, 2010.
Children of Latino families suffer lower academic preparedness entering elementary school compared to non-minority children. The Department of Health and Human Services defines school readiness as recognizing colors, numerical/alphabetical characters, and basic shapes; in these, minority children trend toward unpreparedness for scholastic success, entering school behind non-minority peers. Reasons for discrepancies range: parents suffering high parental stressors (internal and external); few---if any---books for the child within the home; little or no reading to the child; cultural barriers within the community; lack of parental education; parents misunderstanding what Purposeful Parenting is (Adlerian parenting style); violent neighborhoods. Children lacking school readiness suffer reduced chances for academic success and achievement, increased dropout rates, and disaffected psychological functioning limiting employment and increasing social problems. Seeking to remedy this discrepancy, this program---a ten-week course, adaptable to specific communities---aims for measurable increases in school readiness by encountering parents first, assisting them to identify and examine environmental stressors, and providing them education in Purposeful Parenting methods adaptable to their situation. Utilizing community agencies as outreach/advertizing resources and locations for classes, this program seeks increased participant attendance through familiarity with locations and staff within the community and; this program provides a means for measuring the progress of both child, in terms of school readiness, and parents/guardians, in terms of increased abilities and skills in Purposeful Parenting methods.
