Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Dallas, 2011.
This dissertation focuses not so much on a question as on an absence of critical discussion. Although critics generally recognize that Vergil's Georgics shape The Seasons, they often neglect to say how. Otto Zippel, for instance, famously lists the lines in which Thomson imitates Vergil but does not explain the significance of the imitations. The explication in this dissertation focuses on the theme of the Golden Age, which Thomson adopts largely unchanged from Vergil.

This dissertation focuses not so much on a question as on an absence of critical discussion. My approach consists of the explication of individual passages and accounts of related past critical interpretations, along with my own assessments of their value. For instance, the chapters on each of the seasons are primarily dedicated to examining the content of each poem, stylistic traits Thomson employs in each, and his uses or imitations of Vergil from poem to poem, including my reaction to various critical views concerning their structures.

My conclusion is that Thomson hoped that The Seasons might help bring about a new Golden Age for Britain and even for the entire world---that is, to usher in world peace. According to Thomson, the harmony of reason and the passions can be brought about by the contemplation of nature by means of poetry. But the Georgics and The Seasons are not only poetry about nature but invitations to re-examine human nature. Therefore, the two poems are especially capable of bringing about harmony within the soul. This harmony inculcates virtue, especially social virtues, such as benevolence. If one has social virtues, one is inclined to be kind to others rather than conflict or war with them. And if everyone develops social virtues, then there will be no war and world peace will have been achieved. However, Thomson recognizes in Autumn that permanent peace is next to impossible to achieve, because some people will, nevertheless, be drawn to war, rape, and slavery.
