Thesis (M.Ed.)--Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, 2010.
The task of educating children is daunting and challenging for both parents and educators endowed with this great responsibility. The purpose of this study is to examine the charter's schools' value and the impact this value has on the choices parents make in choosing charter schools over traditional schools. This study will investigate whether or not parents perceive charter schools as providing better educational opportunities than traditional schools. The research will attempt to answer the following questions: (1) Do parents believe that better educational opportunities are provided by charter schools? (2) What were significant reasons for parents choosing a charter school? (3) What role does class size and discipline play in the charter schools providing an environment conducive to learning? (4) Does a parent's choice of charter school over a traditional school imply increased parental involvement in the child's education? (5) What student variables cause parents to choose a charter school? (6) How did parents describe their child's academic performance prior to attending a charter school as compared to traditional school participation? and (7) What are the demographics of the parents who choose charter schools?

The research showed that parents generally believe that charter schools provide better opportunities than their traditional school counterparts. The research also indicated that parents prefer the charter schools because of the small class sizes and the discipline found there. Further, the results showed that parents chose charter schools for various reasons such as small class size, better teachers, charter school location being closer to their home, and safety at the charter school. Additionally, the research assessed the parental involvement and revealed that at the charter schools the parental involvement and volunteerism is better. Also, the student variables that led parents to choose a charter school included food and the academic standards are better. When the child's academic performance, prior to attending a charter school, was compared to their performance after the charter school enrollment, the research showed that for the most part the child's behavior was better. The demographics for the parents surveyed included 99% African American, most had some college without attaining a degree, most earned
