Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2011.
Many companies located within the United States have cut costs by outsourcing back office managerial positions. The impact of outsourcing on American workers has been investigated. Although researchers have examined the business motivations for outsourcing and foreign direct investment (FDI), to date no one has examined the effect of these strategies on the home country's employment. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of outsourcing and FDI by U.S. corporations on the U.S. unemployment rate. The theoretical bases of this research included theories of comparative advantage, offshore-outsourcing, and foreign direct investment in international trade. The key research question was to study the impact of U.S. corporations' outsourcing and FDI on the unemployment rate in the United States. The research method used a quantitative analysis of archival economic data from 1987--2009 and employed multiple regression models to examine the impact of outsourcing and FDI on U.S. unemployment rate. Results of t-tests and ANOVA suggested a tenuous relationship between outsourcing and unemployment rate, while foreign direct investments had a strong and positive relationship with the unemployment rate. The findings of this research indicated that foreign direct investment significantly increased the unemployment rate, while the impact of outsourcing on the unemployment rate was not significant. Implications for social change include a better understanding of the effects of foreign direct investment and outsourcing that can positively impact domestic employment rates and economic growth.
