The primary goal of this research was to determine the extent of niche overlap between Microcebus murinus and clutter-foraging bats at Berenty Reserve in southern Madagascar. This research took place from January until June 2009 during the late rainy season/early dry season transition. This is a critical time for mouse lemurs as they must gain the energy stores vital to their survival in the late dry season. Three aspects of niche were compared between mouse lemurs and bats--diet, habitat use, and timing of foraging. A total of 339 hours of mouse lemur surveys were conducted. When mouse lemurs were located, continuous focal animal sampling was performed to gain information on the timing of mouse lemur activities, height in canopy used by mouse lemurs, and the mouse lemur diet. Nearly 223.5 hours of mistnetting and echolocation surveys were conducted to gather information on bat behaviors by exploring the timing of bat activities and height in the canopy utilized by bats. Fecal samples were collected from bats and analyzed to obtain information regarding bat diets. Ninety-eight hours of habitat description and monitoring of resource availability were performed and information on the behaviors of potential predators was gathered during mouse lemur surveys.

The results revealed that the diet of mouse lemurs was broad in comparison to bat diets during the late rainy season. The late rainy season diet of mouse lemurs consisted of fruits, insects and gums while bats consumed insects. At the beginning of the dry season, the mouse lemur diet narrowed as they focused on insect consumption. At the same time, bat encounters became rarer in the reserve. Mouse lemurs utilized the upper levels of the forest canopy while bats utilized the canopy below three meters. Mouse lemurs were active throughout the night in both seasons. Bats were active during the middle of the night during the rainy season and shifted their activity peak to the hours after sunset during the dry season. The broader niche of mouse lemurs relative to bats may be used to model the niche of ancestral primates and subsequent primate niche evolution.
