This account focusses on the first 45 years of psychologist Clark Leonard Hull's life and work, the "pre-Yale" years. After an introduction detailing his eminence in psychology and exhibiting some citation data about his dwindling influence, this report presents information on the many factors influencing Hull's early development. Details about his experiences with religion, his schooling, his aptitudes, and his health are included. Sources of his many ideas on concept formation, hypnosis, aptitude testing, and learning are traced, with special emphasis on his contacts with influential readings and teachers. The ideas of William James, W. B. Pillsbury, J. F. Shepard, Roy Sellars, J. Jastrow, V. A. C. Henmon, Daniel Starch, Milton Erickson, F. C. Sharp, and Ivan Pavlov are shown to have influenced Hull. It is documented that many of the central features, constructs, and methods of his later well-known learning theory grew from this early work. Throughout, special emphasis is given to Hull's methods: his use of "idea books" for extensive planning and for storing ideas, his use of machines for experimentation, data analysis, and theoretical modelling, his employment of graphical displays of all sorts, and his use of seminars as sources and testing grounds of ideas. To convey Hull's breadth of interest and intellectual style, a large collection of his published figures was adapted for clarity and readability and integrated into the account. The entire report takes an integrated psychobiographical point of view, employing analyses of Hull's published scientific papers and books, his autobiography, newspaper accounts, obituaries, and the personal recollections of many of his students. Important data about Hull's work is summarized in the many tables and appendixes, including bibliographies of Hull's hypnosis and aptitude testing research publications plus those of his students.
