Thesis (M.A.)--Southeastern Louisiana University, 2010.
This paper tests the hypothesis that individuals upholding the shamanic traditions and the eminent creative artist show the similar traits of a high risk/high reward adaptive strategy. An adaptive strategy allowed by the manifestation of the fantasy prone personality (FPP). The hypotheses were measured using the Creative Experiences Questionnaire (CEQ) a test for fantasy proneness and reviewing four developmental antecedents of FPP described in previous research using biographical information on a sample of shaman and eminent creative artists. It was found that while the sample showed scores of fantasy proneness no higher than in the general population, higher rates of developmental antecedents were found in both groups. Additional research and review may offer additional explanations as to how the shaman and the artist gain the benefits of their crafts despite an increased risk of mental illness.
