Thesis (M.S.Ed.)--Northern Illinois University, 2010.
The purpose of this project was to develop a parental self-efficacy (PSE) instrument (The Preschool Parent Confidence Questionnaire [PPCQ]) for use with parents of preschool-aged children and examine its reliability and validity. The PPCQ was developed to measure parents' self-efficacy (SE) of specific parenting tasks or roles and responsibilities within the parenting domain/dimension of promoting and fostering the development and growth of healthy physical activity habits and/or behaviors of their preschool-aged child(ren). The instrument was developed as an 18-item scale using Bandura's theoretical model of SE as the framework. The PPCQ was administered to a sample of 153 low-income parents of preschool-aged children, whose preschool-aged child(ren) attend a Head Start preschool program in the northern Illinois region. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed that the 18-item scale contained a three-factor structure, with the elimination of one item (item 8). Results of this study provide evidence for internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha = .921) and validity of the 17-item scale in measuring the proposed construct in this population. This study supplies valuable information to the theory and measurement of PSE.
