The purpose of this narrative was to examine the relationship of this writer's racial identity development to historical events that fueled this writer's assimilation into U.S. middle class culture during the 1960's civil rights movement. This narrative examined how U.S. industrialization, urbanization, and access to desirable employment contributed to the communal pooling of resources by the Black community, thus enhancing this writer's economic opportunities. Literature was reviewed on the topics of racial identity development, Black middle class, the civil rights movement, and the migration of African Americans in the United States. The writer reviewed literature on narratives as an important tool for listening and assessing clients through a cultural lens in social work practice. Also discussed were the experience of developing and writing a narrative and its implication for social work.
