Three same-sex cases of the early seventies confront dominant expectations regarding marriage. Jack Baker and Mike McConnell, Marjorie Jones and Tracy Knight and John F. Singer and Paul Barwick argued for their rights as citizens to marry; with this demand, they challenged normative notions regarding permissible and illicit sexualities. Their cases also reflect debates within the gay rights movement about normalcy, visibility, sexuality and monogamy. Chapter one examines connections between miscegenation and sodomy laws, chapter two illuminates the contentions within the gay rights movement about marriage and monogamy, and offers a biography of the three couples. Finally, chapter three offers a comparative analysis of the main points of contention within each case: sodomy law, procreation, and marriage as heterosexual. Through the history of the gay rights movement, same-sex marriage, and sexuality, I uncover the inherent discrimination and biases in marital laws and explore the history of resistance by "illicit" couples.
