This study examines the conflict generated over America's acquisition of colonies in the wake of the Spanish-American War. Specifically, the dissertation argues that far from being a reactionary movement that was quickly deemed irrelevant in the wake of America's rise to world power, the anti-imperialists of the late 19th Century defended traditional American isolationism using arguments that would later reemerge in the wake of World War One and thereby help to usher in a new period of isolationism during the 1920s and 1930s.
