Studies have shown that with the increasing diffusion of cell phones in Nigeria have come with problems such as network congestion, service inefficiencies, rising costs, and increased taxes. The purpose of this study was to examine and explore which, if any, sociopersonal variables (theft of handsets, educational levels, security risk) and socioeconomic variables (network congestion, high cost of equipment, inflation) are associated with wireless cell phone usage and customer satisfaction in Nigeria. The theoretical impetus of the study was Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory. The research methodology was a mixed model design utilizing quantitative analysis (regression) of yearly usage data (1998-2007). Data from the interviews were used in concert with public records to corroborate the findings from the quantitative modeling phase. There was no statistically significant relationship between social status and cell phone usage. However, a statistically significant relationship was found to exist between socioeconomic status and cell phone usage. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that network congestion, handset theft, and high cost of equipment explained 45% of the variation in wireless cell phone usage in Nigeria. The findings can be used to formulate and implement government policies, and the resultant design, marketing, and deployment of cell phone technology for the benefit of both the Nigerian government and its citizens.
