Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), 2008.
Liu Rushi (1618-1664) was a renowned female writer in the Ming Ching dynasty. Her literary works that have survived until now include 189 poems, 33 song lyrics, 3 proses, and 31 letters. At age 21, Liu published her first work, Wuyin Cao which recorded the relationship between Liu and her lover Chen Zilong (1608-1647). One year later, Hu Shang Cao and Liu Rushi Chidu were published by Wang Ranming (1577-1655), who sponsored Liu's life in Hangzhou. When Liu met her husband Qian Qianyi (1582-1664) in 1640, her life completely changed. Dongshan Chouhe Ji was published by Qian to commemorate their marriage. Liu's literary life was connected to the change of her social status from courtesan to concubine. Unlike other concubines, Liu gained her husband's respect and admiration, both of which were rare in traditional Chinese society.

This dissertation consists of seven chapters. The first chapter sets out the genesis, objectives and methodologies of this study. An overview of the relationship between the process of Liu's 'identity quest' and her works of literature is presented in Chapter Two. From Chapter Three to Chapter Five, specific works are analyzed and the three important identities of Liu, namely 'self', 'female', and 'writer', are detailed. Chapter Three presents Wuyin Cao as an example to study the confusion of 'self-positioning'. Chapter Four reveals Liu's disappointment and depression, which surfaced after she left Chen. Although she suffered the feeling of 'homelessness', Liu affirmed the 'female positions' in Hu Shang Cao and Liu Rushi Chidu . After Liu achieved her life goal and became a concubine, Qian treated her with respect and she gained social status in Qian's family. This was especially evident in Dongshan Chouhe Ji and is discussed in Chapter Five. In Chapter Six, two literary symbols, dream and willow, are elaborated upon. Finally, Chapter Seven evaluates Liu Rushi's literary works and concludes this study.
