Thesis (M.A.)--York University (Canada), 2010.
One of the fundamental tasks of dance technique teachers is to enhance learning. To be effective in this endeavour, instructors must recognize and be prepared to address the diverse learning needs of their students. This research encompassed a grounded theory study of the instructional methods and philosophies of experienced master teachers of contemporary dance, in concert with a review of literature from the fields of motor learning, neuroscience and education. The study reveals that the effective use and timing of sensory information during skill instruction can enhance dance skill learning and address learning diversity. The multisensory pedagogical model presented in this thesis is intended to assist dance instructors, from novice to experienced pedagogue, to effectively meet the learning needs of their students and to create more inclusive dance learning environments.
