Thesis (M.A.)--Ursuline College, 2007.
This research study combined Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) procedures with art therapy interventions for overweight women. Five women participated in this program which consisted of eight individual sessions. Interventions were designed to stimulate the right brain hemisphere of overweight women in an attempt to identify and then transform their behaviors. Stimulation of the right brain was a priority due to the fact that this is the area of the brain that is responsible for functions such as emotions, behaviors and visual recognition. Each session offered art therapy interventions that were based upon the three DBT modules of mindfulness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance. There was no significant weight loss among the women participants, but results showed an increase in positive body image, self-esteem, and self-expressive activities outside of sessions. Suggestions for future recommendations and modifications for a similar program were made.
