This dissertation examines the 1997--2002 Stone Carving Program located on the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Research surveys and interviews were developed to obtain pertinent information from two distinct groups. Part I consist of administration, faculty, and students from the program. Part II includes professional stone carvers, other stone carving programs from the United States and Europe, and prospective students wishing to enroll in a dedicated stone carving program. Information reveals the teaching and learning techniques of this traditional art/craft. Substantial interviews with professional stone carvers lead to unanticipated responses adding to the rich history of stone carving in the United States.
